Does Risperdal Help With Mood Posts in Q&A
Does Anyone Know About Risperdal? My 6 year old step-son just started risperdal. He has a mood disorder NOS and Reactive Attachment Disorder. Will this help the biggest problems of these disorders, homicidal thoughts, aggression, sexual behavior? If so, how much? Are there problems with the drug? Anyone who has taken it, how does it make you feel?

imamnotashamed replied: "i was on risperdal for a while but no longer need it. it is a sedating drug on higher dosages especially when taking it with other meds. it can have a very calming effect and take the edge off but as with all psych meds if you let the doctors get too over the top you can turn into a zombie. all meds effect people differently so risperdal could be a wonderful option but just make sure he doesnt seem like hes miserable, feel free to ask doctors questions. if they give you all the fancy medical terms and high handed doctor speak dont be afraid to ask them to clarify its there job and in my experience if they are hiding behind big words and not listening to whent you have to say its time to look for a new doctor. just keep in mind this is supposed to help him not control him"

Galway replied: "I have taken risperdal for several years now for schizophrenia. At my last doctor's visit my doctor said I was gaining too much weight and my cholesterol was high. She ordered some vitamin B12 for me and more frequent blood tests to monitor me because she said risperdal can cause diabetes. Other than that it works well for me and I feel fine."

vaughn favrua is back replied: "it made me tired and weak. it helped woth my anxiety but wore me out"

luvacat3 replied: "It made me sleep all the time and gain weight quickly. It didn't help my bipolar disorder at all. To be fair to the drug though, NO drugs have helped me much out of like 25 I have tried. And also to be fair, the hospital I was in had pretty good food & I didn't have to cook it myself, so I still would have gained weight, but maybe not so fast had I been at home eating normally."

If I go off my risperdal will I go back to my normal weight? I am currently taking risperdal to stabilize my mood and I am thinking about stopping taking it because I have gained 20 pounds. The thing is its not even working so I think I need another medication. My question is if I go off of it will I go back to my normal weight or will I have to exercise it off?

Kadie-Wa replied: "You will have to exersize it off. But do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor. He or she may have better ideas for you to do, and they may also have an idea about what to do with the weight. Good luck!"

Lindsay Lu replied: "I recommend that you talk to your doctor or other health professional and see what he/she says. They might switch your meds or offer some advice on losing weight."

Simon W replied: "Don't take the risperdol if they don't work, seroquel and zyprexa will cause even more weight gain, so see a psychiatrist and ask for a mood stablizing drug."

risperdal - how long does it take to work? hi, i have just been put on risperdal for pyscosis and to stablise my moods, i was just wondering how long it will take untill i start to feel an effect?? Thank you

tinkiebruiser replied: "it can take anywhere between 3-5 weeks average"

Jo-Ann M replied: "wow I found it to work much quicker than 3 weeks.. I had to come off before my wedding day because I was afraid I was gonna fall asleep!!. i think I felt the effects in the first 2 weeks... it is a very effective medication but I simply felt too sleepy all the time and with 2 babies to look after it didn't work for me. Good luck by the way...hope you feel better soon x"

H1976 replied: "at least a couple of weeks before you feel any change."

Anyone with experience in the use of risperdal in young children? My son is almost 6 and was prescribed this for a mood disorder ( with sensory processing disorder) I have not given it to him yet.

Waiata replied: "I take risperidone myself, it has some memory side effects that have effected my ability to perform work and also there is sleeplessness that I get from it. But each person is different and what affects one person may not affect another. I dont have a mood disorder, in fact Im more calm now that Ive been taking it and it seems to have worked for me. If the medication has any side effects on your son then I suggest that you take him to the doctor and either have the dosage changed or ask about other options."

Is it possible for my 4 year old stepson to have a mood disorder? His mother has him on Risperdal 3 times daily! Is this healthy for him?

Not A Supermum! replied: "We're not doctors, nor do we know him and his circumstances. It doesn't sound healthy, but he may need it for all we know. I assume a doctor prescribed Risperdal for him? If his mother doubts the diagnosis, she can always try another doctor."

question about the medication risperdal? i got put on risperdal for a mood stablizer today and i was told you gain weight on it. i gained 50 pound sin fro months from my birth control 4 years ago and im actually scared to take this but i desperately need it. so im wondering is it the meds that make you gain weight or eating while your on it that makes you gain weight? if thats the case ill just eat baby carrots and vegies when im taking it. thanks in advance and god bless sorry for the typos i was in a hurry i meant i gained 50 pound sin four months :)

hopebrendenply replied: "Go to this site(written by pharmacists) and when you get it up, click on the medications tab. find the medication and it will tell you all about what it is not compatible with along with a lot of other info. has full medicine info My best, Hope"

LeeAngel replied: "Yes, it makes a person gain. I have a 13 yr old boy in my family on it. He was skinny. He was a 28 inch waist, now about 33...since last year. His mood swings are better though."

Alex R replied: "Don't think so. Well I guess you have a choice now. How and crazy, or fat and sane?!?!"

Lea replied: "The average weight gain with risperdal is 7% of baseline. The weight gain associated with birth control pills is temporary. It is due to changes in water retention."

I just got put on risperdal need advice? I just went to see a therapist we talked for about 45 min. and told him I have problems with my moods I also have depression and anxiety. He put me on risperdal and I heard allot of bad things about it, I saw that it is for bipolar and schizerphrania, He didn't really say that I had bipolar and this was the first time I saw him. So should I go ahead and try it?

goldielocks123 replied: "There are other better drugs. What he gave you is a treatment for your symptoms but most people on Risperdal gain quite a bit of weight. I'm not a doctor, but my son has been on Risperdal and gained almost 40 lbs. You can also get something called TD, but it's rare. Why don't you try it for a while and go from there?"

runtoparadise replied: "I was on the same thing for a little while. It is an anti-psychotic drug, but that doesn't mean your prescriber thinks you're psychotic, both anti-depressants and anti-psychotics are used for numerous conditions not just depression or psychosis. I stopped taking it because it didn't do a thing, not that I noticed anyway. Forget any stigma you may think is attached to certain drugs of diagnosis, focus on being well and getting better and improving these things, what may have caused you to be unwell shouldn't be all you focus on, if you do that it can take over your life altogether, believe me I really do know about that, it's what happened to me. You could also get a second opinion, and probably should, it's amazing how doctors diagnosis can vary so much from each other, I think it's worth seeing another doctor even if only so YOU can look at your situation from a different angle. Hope this helps a bit and good luck"

What does it mean? Being more sensitive about my eyes/ears than others. Like I feel sad if they are not good enough, or something I don't like happens. I thought something was wrong but the physical doctor said I was fine. i am teen. Can zoloft or risperdal affect your mood on this, idk. Someone smart help not helping

Lost4Words replied: "I was on anti-depressants before, and you definitely don't want to messed with any of those. They really change your mood and your whole personality. I am not the same person that I used to be. If you are sad or feel self-conscious about something, you may want to talk to your parents and get them to get you some counseling sessions set up. Anti-depressants are definitely not the way to go though. I will tell anyone that."

tamara_gaddy replied: "Probably not, they're for depression disorders and will not have the same effect as plastic surgery, as many of us wish. The only medicene you need to swallow is a massive helping of good old self esteem."

aliceperez77 replied: "You are on this medicine? If you are, it can have effects like this. Talk to your doctor about your anxiety. He can change your dosage or medicine. It isn't normal to fixate on one area and feel helpless about it. We all don't like something about ourselves, but to feel sad about your eyes/ears is out of the ordinary."

smurf 5 replied: "You should check into the advisability of taking St. John's Wort. It's natural and has few side effects. If any at all. Stay away from drugs unless prescribed by a psychiatrist. Sorry family doctors. You're too quick with meds."

weight gain from drugs for bipolar/psychotic/mood disorders? I have trouble with horrendous mood swings. I am a 47 year old female. They had diagnosed me as bipolar, but lithium, depacote, nothing worked, but I gained weight like crazy. I didn't really fit the profile for bipolar other than mood swings (no spending sprees, no promiscuity, etc.). The doctor tried Risperdal and it worked! I felt normal for the first time in years. Then they took a prolactin test, it was 37.7, and normal is 1-20, so he took me off and put me on Seroquel. I am on a therapeutic dose, no relief, still mood swings like crazy and MORE weight gain. Some days I eat nothing at all, and I still gain (and still act crazy). I would like to go back to Risperdal if that number is not completely out of the question. At least if I have to be 30 pounds heavier, I don't have mood swings with the Risperdal. Anyone have any luck with these or other drugs for mood swings, and what did you do about the weight gain? I feel HORRIBLE!

neoswhite_rabbit replied: "I take the seroqual and they gave me Tofranil Pm, Its a mood stabilizer. I have had great results with them. unfortunatley, most antipsycotics/antidepressants cause weight gain. It sucks. I haven't gained much weight but then again I don't get hungry either. But NOT eating can actually make you gain weight. Talk to your doctor about your concerns at your next visit. As far as loosing the weight I drink alot of ice tea (its a natural diuretic- loose water weight) and I try to eat small meals through out the day, even if i'm not really hungry.... Good Luck!"

cotopaximary replied: "I'm just on anti-depressants, but I did gain weight. I've been going to Curves gym and it's been helping. I really hope you find a medication that works for you - I just wanted to convey my best wishes. I remember how hard it was to find the right medication, but once I did, I felt so much better. Hang in there."

Spirit replied: "I know it is hard to think about but it sounds more like you need to see a gyn and get on hormones. Mood swings at 47 are more indicative of the need to replace hormones. I know. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago as being bipolar and was sent to a therapist who told me I was not and that I was just depressed. So, get a second opinion on that too. Go for walks when you feel like eating and or swinging out at the world. Get some healthy snacks. Join a women's league of some sort, it will also get your mind working somewhere else."

karneskristie replied: "I AM BIPOLAR AND I ALSO TAKE SERIQUL AND I HAVE GAINED ALMOST 50 POUNDS IN LESS THAN A YEAR.I WAS ADMITTED INTO A PHYSIC WARD AND WAS PUT ON GEODON/CYMBALTA/SEQUEL/VALIUM/LITHEM AND TODAY ALL I TAKE IS 900 MILLS OF SEQUEL AT BED TIME BECAUSE IT WAS MAKING ME TO TIRED DURING THE DAY.TRY ASKING YOUR DR. TO BE PUT ON MIRIAM IT IS A DIET PILL AND SO FAR IT HAS WORKED (NOT AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE)"

EveB replied: "I am a nursing student and I just finished my psych rotation. My impression was that Risperdal was the drug of choice and obviously very effective. But it was always used in conjunction with another drug. Ask your doctor about adding another drug or to try again with Risperdal. Insist that u feel Risperdal helps and u want to get back on it. Try it and see if the prolactin test is the same again- if it is, try another option. Unfortunately, weight gain is a frequent side effect of antipsychotic drugs. The only way to solve that problem is to deal with it- lose weight like everyone else- work out and eat right."

Aaron C replied: "If you were not having any side effects related to the prolactin elevation many professionals believe that it probably isn't necessary to stop the Risperdal. You may also consider a lower dose if you are very concerned about this blood prolacatin level."

Random Bloke replied: "Half the damn psych meds out there put the weight on you. Seroquel is notorious, as is Depakote (aka Depa-bloat). I take Lamictal (lamotrigine) as a mood stabiliser, and that is weight neutral, although I also take Zyprexa, which did make me gain weight. I don't know about prolactin levels, but you could do worse than ask around at"
